ICFF 2011- Booth801

ICFF 2011- Booth801

ICFF came and went very fast! Our tiny 4′ x 4′ booth contained it all;

Pictures of our Cast concrete series Olithas, Earlier Tertulia Folding Chairs,

and our latest production ready  fixed Tertulia chairs in Steel and Wood.

Thank you IDSA NY for inviting us to be part of their exhibit and

thank you all who came by and shared with us during those four days.

Enclosed are several Links showing great coverage of the Show.

Introducing ‘Tertulia en Pecan’

Tertulia en Pecan‘ is the latest iteration of the Tertulia Series. It is a fusion of traditional wood craft techniques,

and modern sensibility. It features the use of locally harvested and steam bent solid Texas Pecan, and the first

collaboration between Studio Efra and Bedre Woodworking.

It will debut next month at ICFF New York May 14-17.

Introducing “Tertulia Fissa”

‘Tertulia’ is the Spanish word for gathering, a conversational get together in

which people simply sit and exchange their ideas freely. Tertulias can happen

in a moments notice, but they can also happen at a fixed place and time.

Tertulia Fissa is part of a family of chairs originally derived from the metal

curved rods inside a climbing pack and the folding patented and lightweight

geometry of earlier folding Tertulia Chairs.

This tertulia iteration is however, defined by a stout steel sheet-metal frame,

and a fixed geometry. It is heavily bound to site, and it is unapologetic about

being an exercise in pure form. You may also call it an Ode to Richard Serra.

Dimensions: 34″ x 14″ x 28″ (1/8″ steel)

This project is a collaboration between Studioefra, and Colin McIntyre.

Tertulia Story – It’s come a long way since 2000…

Tertulia has been a work in progress for 10 yrs now.  Its humble beginnings can be traced to a Design Studio course  back in Spring of 2000.   This post summarizes the highlights of that process.
Tertulia 2000

Tertulia 2000

my original statement read as follows:

  • I communicate best when I sit and feel comfortable with people, thus the idea of a ‘Tertulia’ came to mind.
  • The word Tertulia means small social gathering in Spanish.
  • The goal for the project is to become myself a ‘Communicator’ and design a ‘Tertulia kit’. This will enable me to create a Tertulia, anywhere I please.
  • I have two weeks, an internal frame back pack, and a cooler for beer, Wine, and crackers, but no chairs, So I will focus on the chairs.
  • Their form will derive from the metal curved rods inside my pack.
  • The chairs are meant to be carried as a snowboard on the pack’s snowboard/shovel pocket in the back.  (brief from 2000)

Tertulia Selected Winner!

Tertulia and Olithas at Design Within Reach

I’m happy to announce ‘Tertulia’ was selected amongst the 4 winners

(Henry Levine, Efrain Velez, Micaelan Davis, and Agustina Rodriquez )

last night for this year’s M+D+F Design Within Reach Austin Furniture Designer’s show.

12 pieces were chosen finalists, including  Olithas. I was very impressed with the overall craft,

rigor, and dedication shown by the collection exhibited, and believe now more than ever,

that Austin is an up and coming place to be as a young Designer. Thank you all who came

to visit, and DWR’s Austin Studio for taking such good care of us,  we had a great time!
