Residential Condo Project in Grand Rapids

It is not all furniture for me these days…
Our latest Architectural Design Collaboration in Grand Rapids, MI;
A residential shell-space condo that features two stories of amazing floor to ceiling views, amazing art, and fun and challenging custom features such as a ‘floating’ bookshelf against the glass, tables that descent from the ceiling, custom mill work, and reclaimed left-over Jarrah wood from our factory in Kalamazoo.

Great project, Team, Friends, and Clients!

Olithas:Part of C77DA Video Gallery

Core 77 awards has selected our Olithas video entry as part of the C77 Design Awards Gallery

earlier this week. We are extremely happy and elated for this recognition, considering we were

up against big budgets like Steelcase, Herman Miller, and Ziba.

Thank you Jeff Marrow for helping us pull this quick Video together in an afternoon.

He went above and beyond any expectations when we approached him to help us with this entry.

Introducing ‘Tertulia en Pecan’

Tertulia en Pecan‘ is the latest iteration of the Tertulia Series. It is a fusion of traditional wood craft techniques,

and modern sensibility. It features the use of locally harvested and steam bent solid Texas Pecan, and the first

collaboration between Studio Efra and Bedre Woodworking.

It will debut next month at ICFF New York May 14-17.

Introducing “Tertulia Fissa”

‘Tertulia’ is the Spanish word for gathering, a conversational get together in

which people simply sit and exchange their ideas freely. Tertulias can happen

in a moments notice, but they can also happen at a fixed place and time.

Tertulia Fissa is part of a family of chairs originally derived from the metal

curved rods inside a climbing pack and the folding patented and lightweight

geometry of earlier folding Tertulia Chairs.

This tertulia iteration is however, defined by a stout steel sheet-metal frame,

and a fixed geometry. It is heavily bound to site, and it is unapologetic about

being an exercise in pure form. You may also call it an Ode to Richard Serra.

Dimensions: 34″ x 14″ x 28″ (1/8″ steel)

This project is a collaboration between Studioefra, and Colin McIntyre.

Olithas – Prototype (2010)

Prototype

O-Lithas is a collection of outdoor/indoor furniture based on the idea of making stone-like slabs appear to be

light and fluid like a wave. The project started as play of words combining the Greek word ‘Lithos’ (Stone),

with the Spanish words ‘Ola’ (Wave) and ‘Olita’ (tiny wave), and is now evolved into a new and consistent means

to integrate steel and cement with Design.

The resulting pieces are minimalist, long lasting, and eco-friendly. The wavy pattern not only accounts for a

unique timeless aesthetic, and common language, but also functions as structural reinforcement along the span

of the slab, and to fit the radius of the metal bar base for a complete integration of materials.

Student Housing Competition – Athens, Greece

Athens Student Housing Competition
Athens Student Housing Competition
Can Student Housing become the prototype of future Urban and Sustainable
Community housing experiences?

The University experience is a transitional stage in our lives. We learn and develop many of the habits and practices  we will incorporate into our daily routines during those years. It is a time to start implementing sound practices learned about sharing with others, working with others toward common goals, and caring  for the environment and our community. We see our proposal as a way to capture the imagination and energy of today’s college student and inspire them with the  possibilities for developing sustainable buildings and sustainable communities in Athens and all over the globe. Shaped by their experiences in college we would hope that they would take this knowledge and enthusiasm and spread it virally wherever their paths might lead them.

The concept for this housing project is that of an urban tree house. Tree houses are cool places that defy gravity and bring the occupants closer to nature.  This housing project forms a protective oasis, a hideaway that refreshes the spirit, and is designed to delight and inspire.

Grand-Island-Sleeper Sofa

Grand-Island-Sleeper Sofa

A bit over a year ago, I had the oportunity to be the principal concept designer for David Edward’s
new Grand Island Sofa, a product aimed at hospital room environments with a very specific program
and functional requirements. The project had been shelved after several years, and was  brought back
to life when somebody mentioned I had a furniture design background and experience.
The product was recently released on the market this past summer 09 with great success.

Thank you  HDR for this opportunity!
